The event celebrated the group’s accomplishments over the past year. Additionally, volunteers who helped create the AFABW 10th annual AFABW Arts Festival in October of this year received award commendations. Additionally, associated groups who contributed to their communities also received AFABW award commendations.

The party, replete with decorations, holiday music and a buffet, was an opportunity for guests and AFABW members to enjoy the entertainment, appreciate the fine art on display, network and relax.

Jo Lauricella, professional speaker and MC for the evening, kicked the show off by introducing singer/songwriter, Johnny Ferro.

AFABW Founder, Barbara Cordova Oliver, gave a talk about AFABW achievements and the purpose of the evening’s event. She then performed Bright Lights, an original holiday song.

13-year-old World Champion Youth Tap Dancer, Robert Terry, known as Dr. Tapper, uplifted the audience with his spectacular dancing.

Celebrity Centre Kids On Stage for a Better World received a commendation award for their work in the community and performed several holiday tunes.

The noted Toastmaster group, The Renaissance Speakers, which has been based out of Celebrity Centre International since 1989, received a commendation for their effectiveness at training public speakers. AFABW member and top internet marketing specialist, Tracy Repchuk, presented the award.

Toastmaster, Glenn Broadus, talked about how taking part of Renaissance Speakers, and doing courses at CCI have greatly helped him in life.

AFABW President, George Alger, gave a talk on the International activities of AFABW and presented an award to Marcia Powell and the Church of Scientology Choir for their good work. The Choir, adorned in traditional caroling outfits, engaged the audience to sing Christmas carols.

Gary Allegretto, who received the AFABW 2010 Spirit of Youth Award, and who is a professional harmonica player and founder of Harmnoikids, performed with musician and professional illustrator, Ian Espinoza, to dazzle the audience with an uplifting performance.

Fine art was on display by Shamala Auset, and by Patrick Whelan – who is the recipient of the 2010 AFABW Lifetime Achievement Award.

Artists of the world create their wonderful works as painters, carvers and sculptors. Musicians play their instruments and dancers delight their audiences. Chefs put an artistic spin on their culinary masterpieces. Florists add arrangement to nature’s art. Writers, filmmakers and actors bring story and theme to life. Amateur artists, children and dabblers enjoy interplay within the creative arena.

Not one artistic activity in the world is unimportant. And the combined effect of the beauty, inspiration and leadership of artists gives us all the pleasant progress of the brighter side of Mankind.

Glendale California “ART DAY” Proclamation

As a token of her appreciation for Art Day, and for the 5th year Art Day has been proclaimed by the Mayor of her hometown of Glendale, CA, Becky Mate, the founder of international Art Day held a celebration in her garden. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served along with artistic Hungarian pastries and chocolate. Children were free to create art at a low art table, and free to hang it along a long rope for all to see. The children also had fun looking for small art items under bushes and behind trees during the Art Hunt. Attendees got to see the works of art honoring Art Day and creativity sent in from around the world thanks to the Artists for a Better World Mail Art Project.

As night dropped her curtain on country after country that night, all the people of Earth went to bed a little happier, a little more peaceful, knowing that there are artists in the world to help us all with their creativity.

July 4, 2009 – Hollywood: Artists For A Better World members contributed to a day of arts and music at Celebrity Centre International. Art exhibits surrounded the Rose Garden café.

Artists included Patti Nicklaus, Jennifer Gil, Dave Repchuk, Nathanaelle Lay, Curtis Jones.

Carmelita Pittman took a blank canvas and painted a picture on the spot.

Children enjoyed having their faces used as canvases as face painter Ron Fugitt decorated them in a variety of ways. The kids also indulged in clay sculpting with artist Jule Rotenberg, who provided the clay and helpful instructions to go along with it.

Later in the day the Rose Garden Café came alive with a music and poetry showcase hosted by Tom Little and Tracy Repchuk. The performance opened with Carmelita performing God Bless America in honor of the holiday. Sylvie and Geoff Taft, AFABW members from Arizona, performed a guitar and vocal duet. Steve Wagner energized the audience with classic rock songs. Barbara Cordova Oliver welcomed the audience to Celebrity Centre, talked about upcoming events and performed original songs.

Tom Little and Adam Rosenthal Rocked the house and were followed by newcomer Chase Carlisle who performed his originals. Vino Allen, another newcomer, performed classic rock songs on his guitar.

Tracy Repchuk hosted Poetry hour, and read original inspirational poetry. Guest poets included Jim and Barbara Ellingson and Russell Salamon.

Liz and Jasmine Harding also helped out with talent and show coordination.

The people who attended enjoyed the aesthetic ambiance while many feasted on barbequed burgers and hot dogs.

The evening culminated in an Independence Day fireworks display on the 6th floor deck of the Manor Hotel.

Traditionally, it’s also the time we go over some of the highlights of the past year, and offer a peek into what’s coming in the new year. Accordingly, this year, AFABW accomplished:

Also in October, we launched our annual AFABW fine art calendar for the new year
We continued to promote the official recognition of “Art Day” (2nd Friday in August), a holiday celebrating the arts
We launched a new AFABW website and AFABW Artists Directory
Tonight, AFABW President, George Alger, presented the latest AFABW Short Story compilation book, which like all AFABW compilation projects, includes artists from around the world.

Artists For A Better World International invites participation in AFABW activities and projects from any and all artists who share a vision of creating a better world through aesthetics.

Artists for A Better World member Becky Mate is the founder of an international holiday for artists of all disciplines called Art Day, which falls annually on the second Friday in August. (This year on August 13). For the past six years, she has let people around the world know that such a holiday exists. The idea has been met with both favor and controversy. She has captured the various viewpoints in a booklet she wrote called, International Art Day: You Decide, The Pros and Cons of Having a Holiday for Revitalizing the Arts.
