Views on Mail Art from a New Participant
May 13, 2022 – Los Angeles: In this video-conference interview for Our Ventura TV, Artist Achim Schmacks and translator Thomas Dausmann (both in Germany) speak with George Alger about Mail Art.
Schmacks is one of the artists featured in the Artists For A Better World International 2022 Featured Mail Art Selections.
Schmacks is a freelance artist in Dusseldorf, Germany. He loves creating frottage as part of his work, which is a method of making a design by placing a piece of paper on top of an object and then rubbing over it, as with a pencil or charcoal.
In some of his work, including his Mail Art in the video above, he features a red thread.
As part of his Mail Art submission to AFABW Int, Schmacks wrote, “In Germany, they say ‘don’t lose the thread,’ which means something like ‘don’t lose the intellectual connection.'”
In the interview, Schmacks discusses his introduction to Mail Art and its relationship to his fine art.
Schmacks expresses his appreciation for the global opportunities to participate in Mail Art and the tradition of no judges or juries or pressure.
