Art Day Changed to April 15th Each Year

March 1st, 2017 — Los Angeles, CA: Becky Mate, Founder of Art Day, speaks with George Alger about the international celebration of artists. Additionally, Mate announced the move of the holiday from the first Friday in August to April 15th, which is Leonardo Davinci’s birthday.

Mate founded Art Day in 1998. Over the years it has been celebrated on a grassroots level in a number of countries. A like-minded group established a similar holiday, World Art Day, which has since been recognized by the International Association of Art (IAA, a group connected to the United Nations) for the purpose of promoting awareness of creative activity worldwide. They chose Leonardo DaVinci’s birthday as the annual date (April 15th).

In a gesture of solidarity, Mate moved the Art Day she founded to the same date.

In the interview she references the following quote from L. Ron Hubbard as a source of inspiration: “The rehabilitation of that art-ability of a culture is a tremendously valid undertaking and will repay a culture a thousand times over for any effort made in that direction. A culture is only as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists.”
